Cover Art for Dathan

Nathan Lee, aka Dathan, is a 25-year-old electronic music producer from San Francisco, California. Dathan initially picked up music production as a result of being impressed by the accessibility of software demonstrated in an Avicii tutorial he watched on YouTube. After searching for his signature sound, he's combined R&B and hip-hop influences with a modern electronic sound to craft a distinct production style, which he’s coined ‘Future RnB’.

making a marc

This biography of the fashion designer, Marc Jacobs, turns the typographic grid into a comprehensive page structure. Treatment of type was carefully considered to complement the diligently curated and edited photos. The life and legacy of Marc Jacobs is displayed though incongruous elements, whose only association is proximity on the page, and happily coexists within a well-conceived grid system.

Modular Structures

This poster was designed to promote a semester-long lecture series for the Architecture, Interior Architecture and Designed Objects department at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The Changing Face of Type Design

A series of posters for a running lecture series on typography were created in conjunction with experimental time-based photography. Imaginative design solutions are often a consequence of the designer’s riposte to creative or commercial constraints. The means of production and inventive use of color can do much to mitigate such constraints. This series examines ways to leverage the possibilities of overprinting and power of compounding form and color to advance creative design solutions.

History Through Type

Through history, typeface designers have made invaluable contributions to typography, and they and their works are seldom recognized or acknowledged. We take the typefaces they designed for granted, and tend to forget that creating an entire font or font family is a very demanding and difficult process, requiring great talent, skill, patience and tenacity. This is true whether the types were hand cut into punches, drawn in pen and ink for phototype or rendered on the computer. This poster celebrates designers who have always kept up with technological developments and made typefaces that are true to the times they were made, from letterpress to phototype to digital type.
